How To Get Coffee Out Of The Rug?

by Staff The Rug Decor

Rugs can transform any room for the better because of how appealing it can look. So, imagine the horror when a cup of coffee spills on your exquisite woven rug and leaves a stain. In a panic, you may scrub the spot in an attempt to clean it. This might make things worse. There are better ways you can get a coffee stain out of the rug. And the process isn’t that tedious either. It might take the same time you need to brew another pot of coffee.

Things You Need

Before you learn how to get a coffee stain out of a rug, gather some of these ingredients:

  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Dish Soap
  • Hydrogen Peroxide

Additionally, you will need other items, like:

  • Water
  • A Small Bowl
  • A Light-colored Towel or Rag
  • A Wet and Dry Vacuum

Home Remedy Options To Remove Coffee Stains

To create an effective stain remover, you will have to mix each ingredient in a specific manner and proportion. Each combination you make may serve a different purpose when dealing with a coffee stain.

Dish Soap And Water

A combination of liquid dish soap and water is one of the ways you can get coffee stains out of rugs. The soap focuses on removing the spill’s oily component. You can use this formula for milder spills.

Baking Soda And Water

Another way you could get coffee stains out of a rug is by making a paste of baking soda. All you have to do is mix three parts water to one part baking soda to create a thick paste.

White Vinegar, Dish Soap, And Water

Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar and dish soap, and combine it with two cups of warm water, in a container and stir well. When you combine these ingredients, they help break down the tannins present in the stain, making it easier to remove.

Hydrogen Peroxide And Dish Soap

This solution may help you get tougher coffee stains off a rug when the above-mentioned methods do not work. Mix a cup of hydrogen peroxide and half a teaspoon of dish soap and stir well. Use this solution cautiously and sparingly. If you blot the rug with too much of the mixture, it may discolor the rug.

Patch-Test The Cleaner On Your Rug

The formulas above should help you extract a coffee stain from a rug. Still, our experts at The Rug Decor recommend patch-testing. This involves sampling the cleaner. Things that you should look for during this process are:

  • Colorfastness - Maintaining the fabric’s color without fasting or running.
  • If the feel of the fabric changes.
  • Potential degradation of the fiber from various cleaning products.

With this in mind, you can follow the below steps to patch-test the rug before trying to get coffee out of a rug.

  • Look for a discrete area of the rug.
  • A corner under the sofa or another hidden location would work best. Even if it gets discolored or damaged, the section of the rug will be in a less noticeable corner.
  • Next, you must wet a rag in water and apply some of the selected cleanser.
  • Press the cloth against the rug, for about five minutes.
  • Let it sit for about 10-20 minutes.
  • Remove the cloth and dry the area with a hair dryer on a low setting.
  • After the area is dry, check for any discoloration.
  • Also, feel the fabric for any alterations and compare it to an area that isn’t treated.

How To Get Coffee Out Of The Rug

If you’ve not spotted any changes after the patch test, you can proceed to the next step to clean the coffee stain. While the ingredients in each formula may differ, the stain-removal process is similar.

Wet The Stain

The first step you need to take in removing a coffee stain is to get most of the liquid out of the rug. Do not scrub the rug as this will damage the fabric. Instead, what you can do is:

  • Blot as much of the coffee as possible with a clean white cloth.
  • Work from the outside of the coffee stain to the middle to prevent it from spreading.
  • Press new sections of the cloth onto the stain until no more coffee transfers.
  • Remember not to oversaturate the rug. You should dilute it enough that the moisture can soak well.

Make Your Cleaning Solution

Choose the best cleaning solution you tried and tested from the combinations mentioned above. Then, proceed to the next step.

Apply The Cleaner

Applying the cleaner is simple. You should use a clean cloth dipped in this solution to blot the stain. Remember to work your way from the edges toward the center. Blot until the stain comes off completely.

If The Coffee Contains Cream Or Sugar

Some types of coffee may contain cream or sugar. In this case, you can combine a cap full of enzyme laundry detergent and a cup of water in a fresh dish. Stir the solution so it blends well. Next, dab the cleaning solution with a fresh cloth onto the coffee stain. This should break down the stickiness of the cream and sugar. If there isn’t cream or sugar in the coffee, you can skip this step.

Rinse The Rug

Some residue from the cleaning may still linger in the rug’s fibers. To remove this, you can use cool water.  Blot up as much liquid as possible with a clean towel. Then, let the rug air dry. Avoid walking on the spot as it risks dirtying the moist region. Lastly, you should use a vacuum cleaner to lift the matted rug fibers.
